General Background
In 2008, Henan's GDP reached RMB1840.8 billion, with a year-on-year growth of 12.1%, which was about 3% higher than the national average. Henan has a total area of 166,000 sq.km and the highest population among all provinces in China. Total population stood at 98.7 million in 2007, out of which around 34% was urban population and 66% was living in rural areas.

According to latest available statistics, the percentage of the secondary and tertiary industry combined made up more than 85% of Henan's GDP in 2007, demonstrating the characteristics of a fast industrialized and more service-oriented province. Value-added of tertiary industry increased by 14.1% to RMB451.2 billion in 2007. Being an important traffic hub, Zhengzhou's value-added from service sector reached RMB109.2 billion, the largest among all cities in Henan.
Henan is one of the country's main commercial crops production areas. Major agricultural products include cotton, peanuts, mushrooms, tobacco and fruits. In 2007, Henan ranked first in the country for the output of grain and oil-bearing crops and third in the country for the production of other farm products such as cotton, meat and poultry eggs. Henan has developed into an important food processing base in China, producing meat, frozen food, instant noodles, biscuits and seasonings etc.
Henan's industry is dominated by heavy industry, which accounted for 65.4% of the total value-added industrial output in 2007.

As the birthplace of the Han people, Henan has many cultural heritages and scenic spots. There are three capital cities of ancient China in the province: Luoyang, Kaifeng and Anyang, all of which have many sites of great historical value, e.g. the Longmen Grottoes is one of the World Heritage Sites.
In 2007, Henan received 170 million (+29.8%) domestic tourists with tourism receipts of RMB133 billion (+30.4%) and 881 thousand (+16.4%) overseas tourists with foreign exchange revenue of US$318 million (+16.1%).
In 2007, retail sales of consumer goods rose by 18.5% to RMB459.8 billion. Major consumer markets are located in Zhengzhou, Nanyang and Luoyang. In 2007, annual per capita disposal income of urban households reached RMB11,477.1 (+11.0%).
Zhengzhou is traditionally a major distribution center in central China. It was approved by the state to be the pilot center for distribution reforms. Major retail operators include Jinboda Commercial Mansion, Denis Department Store, Tongley Appliance Chains, Henan Star Chains, Carrefour and Walmart.
